Jera Guevarra

My name is Jera Guevarra. A 4th year student at University of Calgary majoring in General Mathematics and minoring in Japanese. My experience includes mostly teaching, mathematics, and languages. I am an aspiring teacher/university professor. Alongside mathematics, I’ve always loved learning languages with an aim to speak other languages fluently apart from my own. And with those certain skills acquired, I would love to be able to teach in different countries, particularly in Asia. I have a passion for doing missions and helping the community. I like doing volunteering programs especially the ones that involve teaching kids or tutoring students.

I am currently living in Calgary, a small city located in Alberta, Canada. But Calgary, isn’t my hometown. I am an immigrant from the Philippines and along with my family, we moved to Canada almost 4 years ago. I’ve spent 19 years of my life in the Philippines and I’ve acquired my most of my education there. That’s the main reason why I am more accustomed to the Asian culture and more inclined to teaching in Asia as part of my future endeavor. I’ve spent 19 years of my life in the Philippines and I’ve acquired my most of my education there.

As for my hobbies, I love collecting and reading classical novels. I have an obsession with hardbound books that are old. I love going to bookshops and just browse from different sections like, fiction, classics, self help, science, and languages. Some of my favourite authors are Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte etc. I also love movies that are adapted from books. I enjoy musical movies and theatre plays as well. There are a lot of things I look forward to when I travel. This includes exploring different bookshops, antique shops, cafes, watch theatre plays, and do shopping 😉.

Going to Japan will be my first experience of travelling. Japanese is one of the languages I recently acquired and being in Japan is a good opportunity for me to apply what I’ve learned. I’ve always been fond of Japanese culture. Growing up, I had a lot exposure to things related to Japan, like food, movies, cartoons, dramas, and even the Japanese language itself. I am looking forward to a great experience of authentic Japanese lifestyle and learn different things about the culture of Japan during my stay
